Non Spoiler—Review of R. A. Salvatore’s book: Exile.

Exile is a Fantasy Novel released in 1990 by Author R.A. Salvatore in the Forgotten Realm’s universe. Book 2 of the Dark Elf Trilogy, which was centered on the origins of his most iconic character, Drizzt Do’Urden, the Dark Elf. Drizzt was an extra character that was added to his first novel for Forgotten realms, The Crystal Shard. But after writing him into the stories, it was clear that the Dark Elf was not an extra, but a star.

Outcast looking for their people.

In interviews with Salvatore, he mentioned that what connects Drizzt with his readers is that, like his teenage readers, Drizzt was an outcast and looking for his companions. Most of us can relate to not fitting in or feeling different at some points. Drizzt rejects the evil heritage of his people’s worship of the Spider Queen Loth, and because of this, he is in exile from his homeland.

The Downside to the book.

I found some of the adventures in the land of the svirfneblin to be a bit domestic. Belwar Dissengulp is a former burrow-warden of the svirfneblin, and Drizzt’s only friend for a time. Drizzt saved him from death, but his kin the Drow cut off his hands, which he had replaced with a mithril hammer and pick-axe. But it did not drag too much because of the scene changes back to the land of Menzoberranzan.

Homeland to Exile.

While I recommend reading Homeland first as it is book one of the series. What Homeland does is establish the cruel world of the Drow in Menzoberranzan. Exile further develops the character of Drizzt and his companions he meets along the way. All in all, I would have to say this was a good read, and it left me with a warm feeling at the end.

Non Spoiler—Review of R. A. Salvatore’s book: Exile.More heartfelt than dark.

Being this book is about a Dark Elf. As a teenager I always imagined this would be a dark book series, but I find it to be very light-hearted and warm. Salvatore really explores Drizzt’s sense of right and wrong and his loyalty and selflessness. He will meet and accept various strange companions on his journey through the Under-Dark.

A good book for all ages.

The great thing about R. A. Salvatore’s writing is that he writes at a level that adults can enjoy and parents of pre-teen children can feel good about their kids reading. With few exceptions, He leaves the sex and violence up to the reader’s imagination. The Drow Elves are a sadistic lot. They whip their underlings with snake headed whips. they worship a deity who punishes mercy. These books could be frightening to younger readers, but to teenagers or those on the cusps of being a teenager, they should be fine.

Required reading for Dungeons and Dragon’s gaming enthusiasts.

They literally wrote the Forgotten Realms books to create the history of the Forgotten Realms Dungeons and Dragons campaigns. But unlike most of the books in the Series, the books written by R. A, Salvatore, are more memorable. And in this book you will become acquainted with many dark evil foes that you may face on the tabletop RPG game or on video games.

Non Spoiler—Review of R. A. Salvatore’s book: Exile. I give this book 4 1/2 Stars out of 5.

Non Spoiler—Review of R. A. Salvatore’s book: Exile. Some parts of the book did not move me as much, but the ending was very warm and heartfelt and it made me want to read the next book. I may grade on a curve because I really like the character Salvatore created in Drizzt Do’Urden. What are your thoughts? Did I miss anything?

I absolutely love the books about Drizxt and his friends! I have read several of the seties, but not the latest ones, so I’ll have to find the ones missing. Maybe I’ll settle for e-books? Time will tell.
