Is the Dungeons and Dragons Movie Honor Among Thieves worth watching?

Is the Dungeons and Dragons Movie Honor among thieves worth watching? Let me roll a perception, check! They set this movie in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. This is the same land of The Dark Elf Trilogy and The Icewind Dale Trilogy and many other of my favorite series. Cities mentioned like Baulder’s gate, Never Winter, Ten Towns and Icewind Dale remind us of our favorite tales.

What is Dungeons and Dragons?

To the few people who do not know what D&D or Dungeons and Dragons it’s the original tabletop Role Playing game created Gary Gygax.

Dungeons & Dragons (commonly abbreviated as D&D or DnD) is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game(RPG) originally designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. The game was first published in 1974 by Tactical Studies Rules, Inc. (TSR). It has been published by Wizards of the Coast (now a subsidiary of Hasbro) since 1997. The game was derived from miniature wargames, with a variation of the 1971 game Chainmail serving as the initial rule system. D&D‘s publication is commonly recognized as the beginning of modern role-playing games and the role-playing game industry, and also deeply influenced video games, especially the role-playing video game genre.

Is the Dungeons and Dragons Movie Honor Among Thieves worth watching for DND fans?

The great thing about the movie is that it plays homage to the fans of the original game. Because DnD is about the progress of a party of Adventurers, “Honor Among Thieves,” did a great job of character progression. It started off feeling like a real Dungeons and Dragons game.

Low Expectations because of woke Hollywood.

I expected little with this movie because of how bad Hollywood has been. As Amazon did with the LOTR series Rings of Power or with the Wheel of Time, or any of the new series with Marvel or the M-She-U — I had low expectations. But the difference between diversity and woke, is that diverse characters are not in the story just to make a quota and they are not above everyone else. Every character is there for a reason and feels natural. Because I had low expectations, Dungeons and Dragons’ Honor Among Thieves blew mine away.

(FYI in my book series Brothers of Chaos, I have two characters in a Lesbian relationship. But that doesn’t take away from the plot but makes the plot more interesting.)

The Brothers of Chaos Series is published exclusively on Amazon.

Strong female characters.

The beauty of Dungeons and Dragons is that you can pick your gender, race and class. And that is why I had no problem with strong female characters in this movie. Hogla, played by Michelle Rodriguez, is a barbarian female. She makes up for most of the brute strength of the party. Chris Pine plays Edgin, a bard, a displaced member of the Harpers’s guild, the leader of their party. Simon is another male character who is a bumbling mage and not very good at his craft at first. Doric is another strong female character, a shape shifting Druid played by Sophia Lillis. Daisy Head plays Sophina a powerful Red Wizard. Hugh Grant plays Forge a conscienceless conman. Rege-Jean Page plays Xenk, a humorless Paladin in the Harpers’ guild and our most competent male in the movie.

What I didn’t like about the movie.

Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves paid its woke dues. What I mean is that the movie portrayed the male characters as bumbling and weak at the beginning of the movie. Side not more males commit violent crimes than females in real life. But in movies, if you show a violent female, it’s good art. But when men commit violence, its toxic masculinity. Holga is the heavy that saves Edgin many times. And Doric is the competent female Druid with her shape shifting magic. Contrasted by Simon, who has no confidence in the beginning and is bumbling. But! — they allowed Simon’s character to grow and develop in the story. And in the story, Edgin is a bard and his skills are planning and hitting bad guys with lute at just the right moment. Contrarily in the real Dungeons and Dragons tabletop game, Bards can learn magic and rouge skills and warrior skills. But in the movie, they limited the Bard to the idea guy. But they let him shine in that space.

You have been weighed and found to be okay.

In conclusion, Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves bowed the knee to political wokeness, but they did it in a way that did not take away from the story. All the characters had time to shine in this film. And the story was funny and heartfelt. How can I complain about a story about a single dad? In retrospect, this is the story about a widower, Edgin, wanting to make his family whole and take care of his daughter with the help of some unusual friends. Really, this movie has something for everyone.

It’s better than Okay!

In my final conclusion, Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves is better than okay. It has action and humor. It is light on the romance, but so is the gameplay in the tabletop game. In the tabletop game, there is no romance. And let’s be clear typically DnD is statistically played by mostly males. This movie had plenty of fan service in just how the game is played. I have talked to a few DnD players and all the responses I got from them after I watched it were favorable. Even the joke with Holga and potatoes was great. Also, this movie expands the universe of D&D fans to possible game play. Yes, this movie is worth watching! Do you agree or disagree please leave your comments and tell me what I missed.
