Why Final Fantasy is my Favorite RPG Video Game Series?

Why Final Fantasy is my Favorite RPG Video Game Series? Final Fantasy was the first RPG video game that I can remember playing. For me, it started in the early 1990s. It started with a magazine called Nintendo Power! They produced a strategy guide for the first final fantasy game and I got it even before I got the game. In fact, I believe I rented the game several times before I actually bought it. Yes, we used to rent games in the 1990s.

In the true-est since the first RPG video game I played was the original Legend of Zelda on the NES. But Final Fantasy was one of the first RPG based video-games that let gain experience points to level up your characters to advance the game.

I was a loaner.

Why Final Fantasy is my Favorite RPG Video Game Series? Unlike the Netflix show Stranger Things, I did not have fellow nerds to play the classic Dungeons and Dragons table top game with. I was homeschooled and had a limited circle of friends. And I was dying to get immersed in an epic world of Role-Playing Fantasy. Maybe that’s why I became so invested in the first Final Fantasy Game.

Imagination Not Included.

The original Final Fantasy was like other games from the 1980s they required some imagination. Why Final Fantasy is my Favorite RPG Video Game Series? Fortunately, I had a very active imagination. All the slightest nuances of the 8-Bit graphics of the Nintendo Entertainment System only spurred me onto greater gameplay. The blocky graphics and the cheesy dialog that had to be read is very dated compared to the cinematic games of today. But in 1988 when Final Fantasy 1 was released, it was groundbreaking.

Everything is bigger when you are a child.

In 2018, I replayed Final Fantasy on the original NES system. I used an aftermarket retro game consol called the Retron 2. Whoever created the Retron 2 made the components cheaply. And the controllers eventually broke, but not before I finished Final Fantasy once again as an adult. The game was still enjoyable! But it surprised me how short it was. I beat the small game in just over 40 hours.

Who else loves Epic Fantasy?

I love Epic Fantasy, this has got to be one answer to: Why Final Fantasy is my Favorite Video Game series? When you are playing an RPG game on your console or computer, it can be a book of its own kind. One that you are co-writing with the game creators and writers.

Final Fantasy IV & VI.

When my brother and I got our first Super NES was a big day. It was Christmas literally; we played tons of games. At first all we had was Super Mario World. But eventually we got more games. My brother was more into action games, but I loved the RPG turn based games. Afte playing the first Final Fantasy game, I could not wait to play Final Fantasy II. (It was really Final Fantasy 4, but they did not release the other games in the US until much later.)

The story and the improved graphics with the newer SNES console made the game even more epic! I loved Final Fantasy IV but when I played Final Fantasy VI; it reached a level that has not been topped for me. Both SNES releases had sound tracks that are beautiful and engaging. The wealth of characters and subplots made these games so immersive.

Final Fantasy VII

The game that came out in its actual numerical order. FF7 is by some players their all-time favorite because of the storyline and it’s superb. Dealing with evil corporate overlords of Shinra, and epic villains like Sephiroth, made this game interesting. The new 3-D graphics of the time were amazing but are now very dated and hard to get over. They released it on January 31st, 1997. That was a strange time in my life. I was almost 19 and just barely an adult. Final Fantasy 7 was the most advanced RPG console game of its time. The story is one of the best RPG game storylines. That’s probably why they have made a complete remake of FF7 for the PS4.

Final Fantasy XII

This game has a very special place in my heart because this is a game that I played with my son while he was a pre-teen and teenager. We loved it and we loved it again and again. The voice over acting in the game is amazing. The story is one of the best out of all the Final Fantasy games and the side-quests are many! My son watched me play this game at my house when he was 9 or 10. And when he was a teenager, he bought the remake Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age, on PS3 and we played that game for hundreds of hours again. With loot mining and optional bosses to beat and Espers to collect, the game is legendary.

My Top 8 Favorite Final Fantasy Games.

I have played other Final Fantasy games and know of others, but these are the ones that I liked. Not everything can be a winner. These are just my personal favorites.

  1. Final Fantasy VI. The good guys, rebels, are fighting the corporate steam powered mechanical empire. They seek the return of magic and, with a lot of help from Espers, too.
  2. Final Fantasy IV. John Cecil, in his quest to right the wrongs he had done as the captain of The Redwings. The story is very enjoyable as are the relationships between the characters like Cecil and Kain Highwind, the commander of the Dragoon.
  3. Final Fantasy XII. What can I say? After the fall of Rabanastre… This game is off the chain. Mostly following the storyline with Vaan, a street urchin kid whose brother died in the war. He meets up with a Sky Pirate named Balthier and his girlfriend a viera named Fran. This game goes to so many places it has very large storyline.
  4. Final Fantasy VII. The cult classic! To some it is the greatest RPG story-line of all time, it was when I played it.
  5. Final Fantasy. The original classic. Though glitch and short, it was the first, and it was groundbreaking for its time. I will always love this game.
  6. Final Fantasy Final Fantasy X. I did not like how the main male protagonist characters looked so baby faced and soft. But they made it first for the Japanese audience and facial hair is not very popular there. Also, this is not an open world game. That was not what I look for in an RPG. Still, the story and voice acting and graphics were great.
  7. Final Fantasy Tactics. While not exactly an RPG game, it is more of a strategy game. It’s still very fun and allows you to level up your characters as well. So yeah, it is an RPG.
  8. Final Fantasy VII the remake. The reason I cannot put this game higher is the lack of open world gaming. the graphics and cut scenes are amazing. It’s mind-blowing how far technology has come in the video gaming industry. And yet they continue to improve gaming graphics. Maybe in the future these grand games will seem archaic too, like Final Fantasy 1.
  9. Final Fantasy IX. I think the character designs are iconic and I loved the fan-service this game tried to do for the franchise.

My Least favorite Final Fantasy Games.

In no particular order. To me, these games all equally sucked.

  • Final Fantasy 8. Sorry, I am just not a fan of the story line and I could not get past the modern twist.
  • Final Fantasy 13. I did not like how you had to download your weapons from a virtual vending machine. All the main strong characters were women and I couldn’t relate to them. The game seemed a little too woke for me. The graphics were great, though.
  • Final Fantasy 15. Final Fantasy meets Hot-Topic. This twist on the game did not even seem like a Final Fantasy game. Even though the graphics were fantastic, i could not get into the story.
