Dragon Breeder- by Dante King
Review by Merick N.H. Ulrik
This is a mostly non-spoiler review of Dante King’s Dragon Breeder. So it’s called “Dragon Breeder”. If you like beautiful, fitness-model babes, and magical dragons, and Lit-RPG and Harem Fantasy in an Epic-Fantasy setting, then this book is for you.
My first experience reading Dante King was with the book “Monster Core”. Monster Core was heavy on the Lit-RPG side, while Dragon Breeder is only vaguely Lit-RPG focused. The leveling up aspects make it more Lit-RPG but it is definitely in the Harem Fantasy genre.
Story Synopsis
Our Hero, Michael Gilmore, is the chosen one. He is from Earth of the recent past and is magically transported to another realm. A magical realm where heroes from multiple planets and galaxies are chosen to be Dragonmancers. Dragonmancers are selected because of their mythical bond to Dragons. Each Dragonmancer is gifted with a certain individual and type of dragon.
So, this story is written in first person. First person seems to be the standard for Lit-RPG and Harem Fantasy. Mike, our protagonist, uses lots of pop-culture references. Pop-culture references can work. Just like Ryan Reynolds banter in the “Deadpool” movies. Does this book have too many pop-culture references? Maybe for me but not for everyone. Is pop-culture references a trope you like? You will have a heavy smattering of them.
Moreover, Mike will stumble into the world of Dragonmancers, as the only male Dragonmancer in centuries. This puts him in a lot of steamy situations in Drako Academy with his female counterparts. And they seem to always be dressed in skimpy revealing outfits or nude in the Dragonmancers’ private bathhouse. Surprisingly, on earth, Mike was an martial arts expert with little else going for him. But at the Dragon Mage Academy he is treated like a god. A god with a dragon, “Noctis”, his rare Onyx Dragon. And being the only male Dragonmancer, he is the most eligible bachelor in the universe.
But Dragons are becoming rarer and Dragonmancers rarer. How will they breed more Dragons? It’s not like new Dragons pop out of super model snatches! Oh, wait– they do!
In Conclusion…
Here is my humble opinion of the book: The Series is very popular. I suspect if you love magical-dragons, tons of pop-culture references, and lots of sexy female characters in steamy situations and out and out erotic harem fantasy then you will like or love this book.
If you like a book with a strong plot or even a decent plot, you may get bored. Also the protagonist Michael Gilmore seems to be good at everything. He is the best fighter in the world, and always lucky. Because of this, I never felt any danger for the protagonist. His plot armor was thick making him invincible. This is boring to me.
Likewise, a society built around bonding to powerful dragons makes defeating these dragon-riding-mages seem pretty impossible. Who would want to attack a group of dragon-riding superheroes? Especially ones who kill first for things like stealing and ask questions later ***SPOILER*** A dragonmancer (the good guys in the story) rips a thief’s body in half for stealing lol. Is that excessive force?
It’s obvious the readers are here for the sex scenes with hot dragon-riding females. The ones who have the hots for our human protagonist, Mike the martial arts expert. He has two super hot roommates at Drako Academy. Just let your mind wander and guess what will happen. I don’t like living in dormitories or being in school, I hate hierarchies. Personally, I would be torn, about having to be in any Academy and not living in my own home but the sex from the hot female roommates would keep my going to Dragon warrior School.
3.5 Stars
I understand the plot is secondary to the wish-fulfillment aspects of Lit-RPG and Harem Fantasy. This is not going to be fulfilling to someone wanting to read a Brandon Sanderson or a Joe Abercrombie. But if you go into expecting a light-hearted Lit-RPG and Harem Fantasy then it’s a good read. I give it 3.5 stars.
